WHO WERE THE LAKEDAIMONIANS?

The Spartiatai (Spartans) were the elite citizens of the Lakedaimonian state. The second-class Lakedai-monian citizens were called the perioikoi (‘dwellers around’). Almost without fail, the ancient Greeks referred to the state, its army, its kings, et cetera as Lakedaimonian not as Spartan. The difference between the terms Lakedaimonian and Spartan is somewhat like the difference between the terms British and English. The perioikoi served in the Lakedaimonian army along-side the Spartans just as the Welsh, Scots, and northern Irish serve alongside the English in the British army.
